This week’s God Warrior is Honus Honus, lead singer of Philly’s most prominent band, Man Man.
The past two times I have seen Man Man open for bands in the St. Louis/Columbia areas, they completely stole the show with their manic, gypsy-rock. This is due largely in part to Ryan Kattner (a.k.a. Honus Honus), the gravel-throated singer that calls to mind Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa with his side-show antics and intense live energy. The man rocks a mullet and ‘stache, parades around in gold sequined headbands, and dons white war-paint as he bangs on his piano and sings his heart out.
Man Man released Six Demon Bag in 2006, boasting numerous crowd-pleasing tracks such as “Black Mission Goggles”, “Banana Ghost” and “Engrish Bwudd” that are even more amazing to hear live. We’re in luck, as Honus Honus and his crew are finishing up their next album, Rabbit Habits, which is set to release on April 8th. I have already heard much of the new album from seeing them live, and I think the stand-out tracks are going to be “Big Trouble”, and “Top Drawer”. We’re waiting to get our hands on a copy of this disc, so expect a review of Rabbit Habits very soon, ya heard?
